Yorkshire edged to a 2-1 lead over defending champions Wiltshire after the first foursomes sessions of the English Boys’ County Championship.
Sam Bairstow and Charlie Daughtrey staged an impressive comeback in the team’s final game at Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire, to take their team ahead at lunch. They had been three down at the turn, but worked their way back to all square after 13 and finally took the lead with a par three on the 16th.
They halved the 17th in par before finishing the game 2up. “It was a very good result having been three down,” said Yorkshire captain Steve Robinson.
Earlier Wiltshire’s top pair, James Cooper and Jake Bolton, had given the team a perfect start with their 5/3 win. But they were quickly answered by Yorkshire’s Barclay Brown and Charlie Thornton (image © Leaderboard Photography) who also won by the same margin.
Wiltshire captain Ian Welding remarked: “Fair play to Yorkshire, but I’m pleased with how the boys played, they gave it their all.”
In the morning’s other match, Hertfordshire also lead Northamptonshire 2-1. Danny Daniels and Jon Hopkins won the top game 4/3, and were quickly followed by their team colleagues Charlie Wilkinson and James Clark, who won by the same score.
Northamptonshire’s Robin Williams and Charlie Salter claimed the final point of the morning 3/2.
The start of this morning’s play was delayed for 30 minutes because of thick fog.
