Top golfers will go head to head this week when the English women’s open matchplay championship is played at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.
A highly competitive field, including internationals, will tee up in the two qualifying rounds on Thursday, 6 July. The top 16 players will go forward to the two days of matchplay, with the final being played on the afternoon of Saturday 8 July.
Liz Webster, Ladies’ Captain of Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club, said “We are thrilled to be hosting such a prestigious event as this at our club. It’s a great honour, especially in the year of our 125th anniversary.”
Royal Mid-Surrey has a special place in women’s golf as the home of the annual Mothers and Daughters Tournament and it will provide a great setting for this championship. The club will be represented by home member and Surrey county champion Alice Spani-Molella.
She’ll be joined in the field by several England girl and women internationals such as Mimi Rhodes (Burnham & Berrow, Somerset), Hannah Screen (Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire), Olivia Winning (Rotherham, Yorkshire), Georgia Price (Bude & North Cornwall) and another Surrey player, Lizzie Prior (Burhill). Both Prior (image © Leaderboard Photography) and Winning were in the England team which became 2016 European champions.
As well as attracting English players from across the country, the event has also received entries from competitors from Wales, Scotland and Australia. Last year’s championship was won by Scotland’s Gemma Batty.
