The English Champion Club competition tees off this weekend

Essex will be represented by Chelmsford Golf Club when the England Champion Club competition gets underway on home territory at Romford.

Arron Edwards-Hill, Shay McQueen and Brandon Meads will be bidding to win the tournament and earn their club team a spot in next month’s European Men’s Club Trophy at Du Médoc in France.

This year’s event at Romford on Saturday and Sunday September 21-22 features 31 club teams from counties throughout England. Last year, a Castle Royle team representing Beds Bucks & Oxon and featuring David Langley, Harrison Arnold and Tim Shin, claimed the title at Huddersfield and went on to finish fourth behind Racing Club de France La Boulie in the European event at the same French venue.

Twelve months later BB & O are to be represented by Stoke Park trio Johnny Griggs, Tom Lawson and Paul Taylor. City of Newcastle Golf Club, from Northumberland, who won the title in 2017 and were second last year, are represented by Alex Dixon, Andrew Minnikin and Phil Ridden. Dixon and Ridden return from last year’s team.

Another returnee is Liam Phipps, from Olton Golf Club in Warwickshire, who carded rounds of 67 and 71 to win the individual event last year at Huddersfield. He is joined in the Olton team by Joe MacIIlwraith and Michael Pell.
