Talented England quartet named for Swiss challenge

Four of England’s most talented girl golfers have been selected to take on Switzerland next week in an under 16 international challenge match.

The contest will take place at Heswall Golf Club, Cheshire on Tuesday 17 August just prior to the staging of the North of England Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play.

Hyun-Ji Kim, Imogen Williamson and Ellen Yates (pictured above) will all represent England for the first time against their Swiss counterparts.

Amelia Wan previously featured for England against Ireland in a mixed under 16 challenge match at Hunstanton in October 2019.

All four girls have impressed in key events this season.

Yates was seventh at the English Girls’ Championship at Malton and Norton and fourth at the English Girls’ Under 16 Stroke Play event at Morecambe. At the same two tournaments, Wan finished 13th and seventh respectively.

Williamson finished sixth at Malton and Norton Golf Club and second in the English Under 14 Stroke Play, also staged at Morecambe.

Kim has shown her promise at a number of regional and national events and all four will benefit from the exposure to a new level of international competition.

Rebecca Hembrough, women’s performance manager, said: “It was tough to narrow this selection down to just these four players.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many younger players coming through, taking on tougher schedules and performing well after a challenging 17 months.

“I am sure this quartet will embrace this chance to experience preparing and performing with an England shirt on.

“There will then be more opportunities for our younger players to shine when we play a mixed under 16 match against Ireland in October.”

The annual match with Switzerland was cancelled last year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

England have won the previous two encounters against the Swiss, triumphing 4-2 at Pannal Golf Club in 2018 and 4.5-1.5 at Heswall in 2019.

The match will consist of two morning foursomes and four afternoon singles.
