Yorkshire’s Stephen East made a winning start to his senior career with victory in the Spanish senior men’s international championship at La Manga.
The 55-year-old from Moortown, Leeds, finished one-stroke clear of England senior international John Ambridge – who recently won the Asia Pacific senior title.

He triumphed in very difficult weather conditions at La Manga, when only one player was able to beat the par of 73 throughout the 54-hole event. East shared 32nd place after his first round 84, but moved up to third place after scoring 76 – the best of the day – in the second round.
A final round 74 saw him home, one clear ahead of Ambridge, (80-81-74) and three ahead of Scotland’s Ian Brotherston, who shot the low round of the tournament with a closing 72.
Ambridge, from Moor Park, Hertfordshire, won the Asia Pacific title on the Montgomerie Links in Vietnam. He has been a member of England’s winning teams at the senior Home Internationals for the past two years.
