Congratulations to Djalece and Xyra van der Merwe who are the first to be crowned ‘Volunteers of the Month’ in a new initiative designed to recognise and congratulate the great work done by volunteers in golf up and down the country.
Djalece and Xyra are part of the Shropshire & Herefordshire Junior County Ambassadors Programme, supported by England Golf.
The girls have played and integral part in helping to define what the group aim to achieve and they were so keen to start making an impact that they took it upon themselves to encourage some young people to try golf at their club.
With the support of Telford Golf Club and the PGA Coach they put on a golf experience for pupils at their school which included some practise and coaching before taking them onto the course for six holes.

“We are extremely proud and honoured to be part of the England Golf Development Committee, representing Shropshire,” Dajlece and Xyra said, “it is great to be working with a dedicated group of role models and young golfers who are as passionate about promoting golf and finding multiple ways to encourage more people, particularly juniors to give golf a go!
“We had such great fun and were impressed with how quickly some of them took to the game. They have expressed an interest to play again, which is fantastic. We really think that focusing on promoting the game in schools is the way forward.
“We are thankful to England Golf for the support, guidance and providing us with opportunities to get involved and allow us to continue to develop our own skills and experiences as well.”
Matthew Bloor, Volunteer Manager for England Golf, added: “There are lots of passionate and inspirational young people in golf. Listening to their views and supporting them can make a massive difference to your club.”
