Norfolk’s Steve Warren of Eaton Golf Club has won the title of Fuller’s London Pride Steward of the Year for England Golf’s South East region.
He received his trophy at the annual presentation lunch at The Counting House in London, when the national and regional winners were celebrated.
Steve, who has been at the Norwich club for less than two years, remarked: “I must thank the members for making me so welcome and for putting me here. It’s a pleasure to look after them and to try to raise the profile of the club so everyone knows they’ll be assured of a fantastic welcome when they visit.”
Club captain Trevor Seadon added: “We are enormously proud of Steve for his work in making the club such a welcoming place for existing members, new members and visitors alike.”
The competition, to find and recognise England’s top golf club stewards, is run by Fuller’s and England Golf and is now in its seventh year. The 2013 edition attracted a record entry, with over 700 votes cast and more stewards nominated than ever before.
Steve Warren won the vote of Eaton’s members and visitors just 18 months after joining the club. He is passionate about providing the best possible standards of service and running a vibrant social programme, with the reward of increasing profits. He listens to members and pays attention to getting small details right.
Steve runs regular Fish and Chip Fridays as well as a host of special events, which are often over-subscribed, such as a wine tasting, murder mystery night and a boys’ night in. Meanwhile, the Christmas menu has already attracted over 250 bookings. A new screen in the clubhouse promotes social events, welcomes visitors and recognises members’ achievements – with Steve quick to take and add pictures of successful players.
He worked with a club captain to set up a half-way house beside the 10th tee and the venture proved so popular it paid for itself before the end of the season.
Steve has also found ways to communicate with the local community about the club’s offers and, crucially, to stay in email contact with visitors.
Steve, and the other three regional winners, were presented with their awards by England Golf chief executive David Joy and Mark Roberts, Fuller’s trade marketing manager.
The other three were: national and Northern winners, Simon and Karen Ward of Wilmslow, Cheshire; Midlands winner David Guest of Halesowen, Worcestershire; and South West winner, for the second year in succession, Anna Tyson of Dainton Park in Devon.
They were chosen after a rigorous judging process. The 2012 Steward of the Year, Yvonne James of Rugby Golf Club, joined the judges to whittle down the record entry to three finalists from each region. Each of these 12 were visited personally before the four regional winners were selected, having been judged on their commitment, innovation and standard of service and presentation, together with that extra special something which sets them apart.
