Harry Bigham (Redbourn, Hertfordshire), the newly-crowned English Boys under 14 champion, is one of six new caps in the England under 16 team to face Wales under 16s in the annual international at Cumberwell Park in Wiltshire on 30th – 31st August.
The other five newcomers are Jake Benson (Beeston Fields, Nottinghamshire), Harvey Byers (Walton Heath, Surrey), Coby Cartwright (Cosby, Leicestershire), Ben Jones (Brampton Heath, Cambridge & Huntingdon), and Dan O’Laughlin (Ruddington Grange, Nottinghamshire).
The other two members of the squad, Toby Briggs (Dunston Hall, Norfolk) and Billy Spooner (Boston, Lincolnshire) have been capped previously.
Bigham (image copyright Leaderboard Photography) won the Reid Trophy by three strokes at Enville earlier this month, finishing as the only player under par against a powerful international field, while Benson finished 15th in the English Boys under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy.
Briggs was the 2013 Norfolk under 14 champion while he also won the Daily Express Euuropean Junior Open in Spain. He was capped in this year’s under 16 international against Spain in Madrid and finished seventh in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.
Byers is a member of the Surrey under 16 squad, while Cartwright finished equal fourth in this year’s McGregor Trophy at Radcliffe-on-Trent and equal eighth in the Midland Boys Qualifying. Jones finished equal ninth in this year’s McGregor Trophy, while O’Laughlin finished tied seventh in the same event.
Spooner has been an under 16 international since 2012 when he made his debut against Spain. This year’s Midland Boys champion, he finished equal second in the English Boys under 16 Championship and the Canadian Junior Challenge last year, joint fourth in the North of England under 16 Championship and fifth in the Carris Trophy, the English Boys under 18 Championship.
The format is singles on the morning of the 30th and foursomes in the afternoon while just singles will be played on 31st.
