Philip Ridden and Andy Grimwood were the only two players under par after day one of the Logan Trophy at Thorpeness Golf Club in Suffolk.
Ridden – from City of Newcastle – emerged from a tough day of scoring without a blemish on his card.
Sixteen pars and two birdies took Ridden (main image) to two under par for his round and a share of the lead.
Grimwood’s scorecard was more colourful, but the end result was the same as he also signed for a 68 (-2)
The St Neots golfer had four birdies and two bogeys in his round on a day when only six players managed to avoid blue figures.
There are four players tied for third after shooting level par rounds of 70.
Phil Hubball (Whittington Heath), Paul McMullen (Frilford Heath), Simon Richardson (Spalding) and Andrew Minnikin (City of Newcastle) can be happy with their day’s work.
Defending champion Geoff Harris from Formby is back in a tie for 29th on five over par.
However, with another 18 holes on Saturday before the top 45 and ties make the cut, there’s still plenty for the field to play for on day two.
