Lauren wins Astor Salver by six

Teenager Lauren Taylor warmed up for her bid for a second British amateur title with an impressive six shot win in the Astor Salver at The Berkshire.

The 18-year-old international from Woburn was armed with a new putter and had 12 birdies during the 36-hole event, finishing at seven-under par.

Lauren (image © Leaderboard Photography) had scores of 70 on the Red course and 68 on the Blue and commented: “It was nice to put two really solid rounds together and to shoot quite low.

“It was a nice warm-up for the British – I know I’m playing well and I’m hoping for a good week,” she said. The championship, at Machynys Peninsula in Wales, starts on Tuesday.

Lauren won the British two years ago when, at the age of 16, she became the youngest-ever champion. Regaining the title is high on her target list for this season, as is a place in the Ricoh Women’s British Open, which she also played in 2011.

She’s just back from her first year at Baylor University in Texas where she scored a major success in US collegiate golf by winning her conference championship. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence from being in America, I feel as though I’ve grown up a lot,” she said.

Lauren was also happy to succeed college team-mate Hayley Davis (Ferndown) as the winner of the Astor Salver. “It’s nice to keep it in the team!” she said.

Curiously, all Lauren’s bogeys in the tournament were on par threes – but they were more than outweighed by her birdies, including a closing run to the second round of birdie, birdie, par, birdie. “It was a pretty good run and it’s always nice to birdie the last hole.”

Since returning home from the USA, Lauren has also travelled to Holland to play in the Deloitte Ladies Open on the LET Tour, where she made the cut.
