Inci Mehmet sets Surrey championship records

Teenager Inci Mehmet completed a record-setting victory when she won the Surrey ladies’ championship at Hindhead Golf Club.

The 15-year-old from Wentworth became the youngest-ever titleholder when she beat Guildford’s Kate Shepherd with a birdie on the 22nd hole of the final.

The previous youngest winner was Ellis Keenan of Sunningdale, who was 18 when she won the title in 2009, also beating Kate Shepherd.

Inci is also the 2012 Surrey girls’ champion and is the first player to hold both titles in the same year.
At the ladies’ championship she also won four trophies for her qualifying scores, while Charlotte Griffith (Walton Heath) took the fifth, an intermediate prize.

Inci was one of four juniors who qualified for the matchplay stages of the championship, alongside Lauren Horsford (Wimbledon Park), Gee Won Park (Hampton Court Palace) and Shannon Flynn (Burhill).

In the matchplay, Inci beat England senior international Roz Adams (Addington Court), Maggie Lowe (Woking) and Lauren Horsford to reach the final. Kate Shepherd (Guildford) beat Jo Stocks (Worplesdon), Katie Fewster (Worplesdon) and 2011 champion Lisa McGowan (Worplesdon) to reach the final.
