Annabell Fuller and Max Hopkins 2017 Telegraph Vitality

England teenagers Max Hopkins and Annabell Fuller claimed impressive wins in the prestigious Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship at Quinta do Lago, Portugal.

Hopkins, 14, became the youngest champion in the 33-year history of the competition while Fuller, 15, had a runaway win in the girls’ event, finishing 13 shots clear.  Hopkins, from Bishops Stortford Golf Club, Hertfordshire, was two-under for the 54-hole event and three clear of Ben Jones (Northamptonshire County).  “That was my greatest win, it will take time for this to sink in,” he said as he added his name to a list of former champions which includes Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Meanwhile Fuller, from Roehampton in Surrey, finished one-under in the girls’ championship. Her closest challenger was Lily May Humphreys, the British girls’ and English women’s champion.  “This is such an honour,” said Fuller. “There are so many who have won this and gone on to win big championships. One day I hope I can follow in their footsteps.”

The victories cap the 2017 season for both players. Hopkins was runner-up in the English U16 boys’ open championship and third in the North of England U16 boys’ open. Fuller is the English U16 girls’ champion, was runner-up in the Annika Invitational Europe and third in the European Young Masters.
