Lancashire’s Hollie Muse and Hampshire’s Kerry Smith – who have both held national titles – were the winners of the last two major scratch events of the season.
Hollie, 13, won the Royal Birkdale ladies’ scratch trophy by three shots, while Kerry took the honours in the Liphook scratch cup on countback. Charlotte Thompson of Essex was runner-up in both events.
Hollie, from West Lancashire, was the only player under par after 36 holes at Royal Birkdale, scoring 75, 73 for a two under total of 148. Her win came just after she claimed the girls’ U14 title at the North of England U16 championship at Heswall – and set a course record of six-under 68 at her home club. Hollie was the 2012 English U13 girls’ champion.
Kerry Smith, from Waterlooville, is a past English amateur champion, international and Curtis Cup player. She retained the Liphook scratch cup with scores of 77 and two-under 70. Charlotte Thompson, who won this event in 2011, had opened with a four-under 68, but added a second round score of 79 to lose on countback.
