Flying Kiwi overtakes Kimsey Down Under

Nathan Kimsey

Despite going into the final round of the Lake Macquarie International in Australia as joint leader, Nathan Kimsey had to settle for a share of second spot.

The 19 year old from Lincolnshire carded a closing 69 for 276, 12 under par, at the Belmont Golf Club in New South Wales, three strokes behind the winner, New Zealand’s Josh Munn, who shot 66 to take the title.

In the third event of the England party’s Australian tour, Kimsey was vying for the lead throughout after opening with 67, which included eight birdies, but was eclipsed by Munn’s 65 and a course record-equalling 63 from Australia’s Brett Drewitt.

A second day 69 saw Kimsey in joint second, just a shot behind Munn and Drewitt, who shared the lead on 135.

A 71 on day three brought Kimsey level with his two rivals, who both returned 72, setting up a thrilling final day shoot-out.

The joint overnight leaders went toe to toe over the first seven holes, all three at ten under, but at the par four eighth, Kimsey edged ahead with a remarkable birdie.

A poor drive saw him stymied behind a tree but he managed to pitch to within three metres and sank the putt for birdie.

He turned at 11 under, level with Queenslander Cameron Smith, playing in the group ahead, with Munn and Drewitt one behind.

But it was the 21 year old Kiwi who took the honours with a six-under-par 66. Relishing the rainy, sodden conditions, Munn charged the back nine in 31 with an eagle-three at the tenth, followed by birdies at the 12th, 13th and 17th for a 15 under par tally as Kimsey and Drewitt signed for 69s.

Of the other England players in the field, Craig Hinton finished with 67 for 284, four under, as did Garrick Porteous with a closing 70. But double Brabazon Trophy winner Neil Raymond had a disappointing week, finishing down the field on 303 after a closing 79.
