England pulled off an impressive final day charge to claim the runners-up spot in the Senior Women’s Home Internationals at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, Somerset.
The team beat Wales 7-1 to leapfrog Scotland and take second place behind Ireland, after the three-day round robin tournament.
England’s hopes of regaining the Sue Johnson Trophy were put on the back foot after the opening day when they lost 6.5-1.5 to Ireland, the defending champions.
However, the team fought back on day two with a 5-3 win over Scotland, which proved crucial to the final placings. After the third day’s play England and Scotland were tied with two wins each and an equal number of game points won, so the result of their individual match decided the order of the teams.
England have won the Senior Women’s Home Internationals 10 times since it started in 2003. Most recently the team had three consecutive wins from 2014, but that run of success was ended in 2017 by Ireland.
