English eight in GB&I Vagliano squad

Eight English players have been selected for the initial GB&I squad for the 2019 Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe.

Four are Curtis Cup players: India Clyburn (pictured), Annabell Fuller, Alice Hewson, and Lily May Humphreys. Alongside them are Lianna Bailey, 2018 St Rule Trophy winner; Hollie Muse, a semi-finalist at the Women’s Amateur Championship; Bel Wardle, the Portuguese open champion; and Caitlin Whitehead, the European Young Masters champion.

They are in a 19-strong squad selected by The R&A. The biennial match will be played at Royal St George’s, on the Kent coast, from 28-29 June. GB&I will be aiming to win the match for the first time since 2005 when they defeated the Continent of Europe 13-11 at Golf de Chantilly.

England’s Elaine Ratcliffe, who will lead the team for the first time as captain of GB&I, said: “We have selected a talented group of players and they all now have a chance to make their case to be included in the team to play the Continent of Europe.

“We will be monitoring their results closely over the coming months as well as the performance of other players who still have time to play their way into our plans, ahead of selecting the eight golfers to play at Royal St George’s.”

The GB&I team will be made up of the two highest ranked golfers in the World Amateur Golf Ranking™ on 29 May and six players chosen by The R&A women’s selection committee.

Six players will be selected on Monday 3 June, following the St Rule Trophy, and two players selected on Monday 17 June, following the Women’s Amateur Championship at Royal County Down.

The GB&I team for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match will be announced on Monday 3 June.
