England’s Spirits high ahead of Texas tournament

England Golf has today announced the team which will contest the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship from 4-6 November at Whispering Pines GC in Texas.

The mixed team is made up of four US-based college players with previous experience of international competition.

Annabell Fuller and Caley McGinty (main image) are called up after winning gold for England at the European Ladies’ Team Championships, helping the women’s squad win the Home Internationals and featuring for GB&I in the Curtis Cup.

They are joined by former English Men’s Amateur champion Conor Gough and Joe Pagdin, an ex-boys’ international and member of Team GB at the 2018 Youth Olympics.

Gough (pictured below) was a member of the 2019 GB&I Walker Cup team at Royal Liverpool, while Pagdin was involved in the squad which competed in the same event earlier this year at Seminole, Florida.

Fuller and Pagdin (pictured below) are studying at the University of Florida, McGinty attends Oklahoma State while Gough is at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

As well as chasing gold in the primary event as a four-strong team, there are also separate team titles up for grabs for the men and women and a prize for leading individuals.

England previously struck gold in the mixed team event in both 2005 and 2007.

“This is a special and unique event and one which will provide an excellent test for four very talented players” – Stephen Burnett, England Golf

Commenting on the selection and the challenges ahead, Stephen Burnett, men’s performance manager at England Golf, said: “The England selectors have picked a very strong team to push for honours in the highly competitive Spirit International tournament at Whispering Pines.

“This is a special and unique event and one which will provide an excellent test for four very talented players.

“Competing at the highest levels on foreign soil is paramount in our quest to give young English golfers the broad range of experiences they need to grow and develop, as we look ahead to World and European Championships on the horizon next summer.”
