Nick Marsh (Huddersfield, Yorkshire), a quarter finalist in last month’s Amateur Championship, who led the first round of the Brabazon Trophy last week, is one of three players selected to represent England Golf in the Chiberta Grand Prix in Biarritz on 4th – 7th July.
He will be joined by Paul Howard (Southport & Ainsdale, Lancashire) and Michael Saunders (Dartford, Kent). Ryan Evans (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) will then link up with the trio for the Biarritz Cup on 11th – 14th July.
Marsh, 18, fired an impressive opening two-under-par 70 in testing conditions at Formby but eventually finished tied 19th. Last year, he reached the quarter finals of the British Boys and won five of his six games in helping England retain the Boys Home Internationals and Yorkshire win the Boys County Championship. He was also the individual winner in the Canadian International Junior Challenge.
Howard, 22, has represented Lancashire in the Men’s County Championship and finished runner-up in last year’s Selborne Salver. This year, he finished fifth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship and equal ninth in the St Andrews Links Trophy.
Saunders, 22, is a former winner of the Lagonda Trophy, finishing fifth this year, while he was equal sixth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play and tied seventh in last week’s Brabazon Trophy. He is also a member of the England ‘A’ squad.
Evans, 26, is in a rich vein of form which has seen him into the top six on the Titleist/FootJoy England Golf Order of Merit. He won the Berkshire Trophy recently, finished runner-up in the St Andrews Links Trophy and joint third in the French Open Amateur Championship.
Over the weekend he finished tied seventh in the Brabazon Trophy but won the Scrutton Jug for the best aggregate from that and the Berkshire Trophy. Last year, he finished tied seventh in Biarritz.
The Chiberta Grand Prix is medal stroke play over 72 holes with a halfway cut. There is also a team event over the first two days, the best two of the three cards to count. The Biarritz Cup is a similar competition but the team event is for pairs with both scores to count.
