England junior internationals Lily May Humphreys and Ben Jones were runaway winners at the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.
Jones was 18-under par for 72 holes at Nizels in Kent, with scores including an exceptional nine-under 63 in the third round. He finished 10 shots clear of the runner-up in the boys’ event.
“I was really pleased,” said Jones, 18 (Northamptonshire County). “It’s my first big win and I’ve been waiting for a long time so it’s nice to get over that barrier.”
His bogey free 63 was a personal best and he added it to three 69s. “I just hit the ball really well all week and holed those 8-10ft putts that sometimes you miss,” he said.
He recently represented England in the German boys’ championship having been fourth in the Peter McEvoy Trophy and tied 10th in the U21 Bernard Darwin Salver.
Humphreys (Stoke by Nayland, Essex) marked her return after injury with a 12-shot win in the girls’ competition, ahead of runners-up Carys Worby of Wales and Hannah Screen, another England girls' squad player from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
The 15-year-old also teamed up with Harry Goddard (Hanbury Manor, Hertfordshire) and Conor Gough (Stoke Park, BB&O) to win the Nations Trophy for England. Their team score of eight-under put them six ahead of runners-up Wales.
Humphreys had to pull out of a recent tournament with a foot injury and she said: “My goal for the tournament was to try and show myself that I’m playing good and can do good scores again. My last round really proved it to me with a 68.”
She added that four-under par score to earlier rounds of 71 75 75 for a one-over total. “I’m really pleased to have played like I did and to win,” she said.
Humphreys is the English U16 girls’ open champion and this season has played impressively in top women’s scratch events and reached the last 16 in the French U18 championship. She recently helped England beat Spain in a two-day mixed U16 international and this weekend will represent GB&I in the junior Vagliano Trophy against the Continent of Europe.
