England’s hopes of a gold medal at the European men’s senior team championship were dashed when they lost today’s semi-final to Germany 4-1.
The Germans won the first three games to secure their place in the final at the Diamond Club, Austria. They will play Spain.
England, meanwhile, will meet Ireland in the play-off for the bronze medal – which they won last year.
Today, the foursomes pairing of Ian Attoe and Richard Partridge was beaten 4/3, while Trevor Foster lost 2/1 and Stephen East lost 3/2. The games of Richard Latham and Rupert Kellock were halved.
In the women’s championship in Belgium, England bounced back to form with a 4-1 win over the Netherlands.
Helen Lowe and Aileen Greenfield led the way with a 4/3 foursomes win. They were followed by singles wins from Julie Brown (2/1), Sue Spencer (3/2) and Cath Rawthore (4/3). Jackie Foster was beaten only on the last hole.
Tomorrow England play France and a win will give them fifth place, the best they could achieve after tumbling out of the medal race.
