England beat Ireland in a dramatic opening day of the Senior’s Home Internationals

European champions England beat Ireland 6-3 on the opening day of the Senior Men’s Home Internationals at Alnmouth Golf Club in Northumberland.

The English started strongly in the foursomes when Ian Attoe and Alan Mew combined to beat John Mitchell and Barry O’Leary 4 & 2. Rupert Kellock and Tim Whittaker then halved with John O’Brien and Pat Lyons before Ireland’s Steven Graham and Karl Bornemann levelled things up at lunch with a 2&1 victory over Rich Jones and Paul Wharton.

The afternoon also started brightly for England when both Attoe and Richard Norton completed one hole victories over Mitchell and Lyons and Kellock then made it three out of three with a 3 & 2 win over O’Brien. Graham claimed one point for the Irish when he beat Whittaker 6&4 before England’s Rich Jones beat Liam Halain 3&1. The last singles match between Wharton and Bornemann was halved.

In the other match on the opening day, Scotland completed a 5 ½ – 3 ½ victory over Wales. The Scots won the foursomes 2-1 and then edged the singles 3 ½ – 2 ½ in a series in which no less than three of the six individual matches were halved.

Day two of this annual round robin tournament will see England play Wales and Scotland take on Ireland.
