This championship will be a landmark occasion for England Golf as it represents the first occasion where the national governing body has both managed and fielded teams of amateur golfers with a disability in international competition.

While the event will be special for all eight team members, the match has extra significance for the Gilks family with mum Martine joined in the squad by daughter Heather.

Both championships will take place under the auspices of the European Golf Association (EGA) and EDGA, formerly the European Disabled Golf Association.

Nigel Edwards, performance director at England Golf, said: “This is an exciting time for the players as they prepare to represent their country at a major international event.

“I have no doubt that the eight men and women selected will do not only themselves, but also the country proud and we support them all the way.”

“For England Golf it’s a hugely significant moment as we take a team of disability golfers to an international event for the first time.

“Promoting disability golf and making sure every golfer has the opportunity to reach their full potential is at the heart of what we do as an organisation.”

“I’m thrilled that the performance department can support both these teams achieve their goals now and in the future.

“On behalf of everyone at England Golf, we wish Rob, Craig and our teams in Belgium the very best of luck.”

In the Team Championship, the scoring format is gross stroke play and comprises foursomes, greensomes and singles on consecutive days.

At the same time, competitors in the Nations Cup will play Stableford format with golfers also competing in foursomes, greensomes and singles where nett scores will count.

The England squads – led by team managers Rob Kedzlie and Craig Thomas – will compete with 12 other nations for silverware.

Teams from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden will all go for glory.

Sweden won the Team Championship the last time the event was staged in 2019 while the Czech Republic took honours in the Nations Cup the same year.
