Golf Clubs (COVID-19) Updates

Last guidance update: Thursday 14 May (update on retail and coaching provision)

The UK Government has announced that golf will be able to resume in England on Wednesday, 13 May 2020 after a seven-week hiatus.

In accordance with the Prime Minister’s statement of 10 May and subsequent updates, all outdoor sport, including golf, must be enjoyed alone or within a household group or in two balls with one person from outside your household.

Updated guidance has also been provided on how retail provision and coaching may operate after the 13 May resumption of play.

We would like to assure the golfing community that England Golf staff will continue to work remotely with all affiliated golfers, clubs and counties to try and minimise the damage caused by the suspension of regular golf club life.

We will continue to signpost clubs and counties to the latest government advice and schemes designed to help the economy cope with the disruption caused by coronavirus.

Clubs can be assured that England Golf continues to liaise with our partners in golf and work in consultation with the government throughout these tough times.

To discover more about this and how England Golf is encouraging a Play Safe, Stay Safe message, read an open letter to all clubs from our CEO, Jeremy Tomlinson.

Greenkeeping staff

It is not appropriate to have staff on site without anyone being first aid trained. The usual potential risks to health inherent with greenkeeping work are still present in the current circumstances. Fortunately, many greenkeepers have received some form of first aid training.

The safety of workers can also be supported by appropriate risk assessments being carried out and robust lone worker policies being put in place.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has produced some new guidance in light of the current situation.

All work must be carried out in strict accordance with government guidelines on social distancing. Greenkeeping staff should discuss all work options with their employers.

Sports and Recreation Alliance advice

Golf industry guidelines

The GCMA, PGA, BIGGA and R&A have issued golf industry guidelines to help clubs make contingency plans for their business. This document details how best to prepare for a health emergency and possible staffing shortages.

This remains a fluid situation and advice and guidance to clubs may change according to government and expert advice.
