Busy bees at Farleigh win Sustainability Project of the Year

Farleigh Golf Club has scooped the top honour in the Sustainability Project of the Year category at the England Golf Awards 2022.

The club, set in a picturesque 350-acre venue in the North Surrey Downs, recently embarked on a project nicknamed ‘Operation Pollinator’.

Their efforts, quite literally, have blossomed in the past year.

Two new wildflower areas were created at strategic sites on the 27-hole venue in order to encourage native bees and insects back to the landscape.

Initially, the plan was due to cover 0.5 hectares of land.

With that area of coverage already exceeded and half a hectare added for 2022, the club plan to be busy bees well into the future.

Kenny MacPhail, course manager,  said: “We’re guardians of our land and we have a responsibility to be as sustainable and environmentally positive as possible.

“The members reacted really well to what we’ve done – it’s a visual parcel of land we have created and it will enhance the area visually as well as environmentally.”
