Lancashire produced a commanding performance to beat Northamptonshire 7-2 on the opening day of the Boys County Finals at a hot and humid North Foreland Golf Club in Kent.
Lancashire representatives George Holland and Matthew Jackman, Jack Anthony McPhail and Charlie Ward, and Josh Fallows and Jamie Van Wyk combined to give their team a 3-0 lead after the morning foursomes. Harry Oddy put Northamptonshire’s first point on the board when he beat Jackman 6 & 5 in the opening singles but Alex James, Holland, Fallows and Van Wyk all won for Lancashire before Hayward picked up a consolation point for Northamptonshire with a 2 & 1 win over McPhail.
The other match between Kent and Devon proved to be a much closer affair.
Devon representatives James Reed and Fred Bishop beat Kent’s Oliver Lewis-Perkins and James Wright 3 & 2 in the top foursomes. The match between Kent’s Jack Shipton and Oliver Gaisford and Devon’s Matt Millar and Jay Scott was halved before the host county squared things up when Jacob Kelso and George Young beat Craig Passmore and Jack Jeffery 7 & 5.
At that stage it could have gone either way but things started to turn in Devon’s favour when Millar came back from four down after four to beat Lewis-Perkins 3 & 2 in the opening singles. Reed then went on to beat Miles Gray 3 & I and Passmore claimed a one-hole victory over Young before Wright sealed the match with a halve against Bishop.
Kent’s Gaisford and Kelso gained two consolation points when they beat Devon’s David Baldwin and Scott 2 & 1 in the bottom two matches to see the match finish 5-4 in Devon’s favour.
The second day of the County Finals sees Lancaster take on Kent while Devon will be up against Northamptonshire.
