Ben Schmidt and Mimi Rhodes flew the flag for England as they claimed brilliant victories in the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship at Quinta do Lago.
England Men’s squad player Schmidt has already described 2019 as being ‘crazy’ after winning both the Brabazon and Carris trophies.
This week in Portugal, the year became a little bit crazier for the 17-year-old as he claimed a stunning 15-shot victory over the rest of the field in the boys’ event.
An opening round of 68 was followed by two consecutive scores of 69 as he finished on 10-under par – the only player in the competition to finish the week in red numbers.
Fellow England golf squad member Max Hopkins was tied for second alongside Ireland’s Aaron Marshall.
Yorkshire’s Schmidt impressed host and former US Open champion Rose with his performance over the week – even winning the longest drive event in the pre-tournament AM/AM!
Rhodes also set the tone for her week by winning the longest drive event for the girls – and followed it up with a brilliant performance during the championship itself.
With sister Patience also taking part, Mimi was tied with Scotland’s Carmen Griffiths going into Friday’s play.
After rounds of 75 and 77, Somerset’s Rhodes saved the very best until last.
An amazing birdie, birdie, eagle finish for the 17-year-old allowed her to storm home in 32 shots.
The one-under par round of 71 left rivals trailing in her slipstream and gave her a four-shot margin of victory over Wales’ Darcey Harry.
