English amateurs Sam Bairstow, Joe Long and Laird Shepherd will tee-off in their maiden Open Championship this week at Royal St George’s.
Bairstow (pictured above), a member of the England Men’s Squad, was the only amateur golfer to come through Open Qualifying, securing his place in the line-up courtesy of a course record 63 and a second round 69 at St Annes Old Links.
Rye Golf Club’s Shepherd booked his spot in his first major in remarkable style, turning round an eight-shot deficit to land the The 126th Amateur Championship at Nairn earlier this year.
Long won the same title 12 months earlier, and has already picked up major championship experience, living the dream of almost every golfer on the planet by competing at this year’s US Masters at Augusta.
The three will be competing against five other amateur players for the Silver Medal, awarded to the top placed amateur in the field.
