The England men's and women’s teams are through to the European team championship semi-finals after both dug deep to defeat Irish sides.
The men, playing at Halmstad Golf Club, Sweden, won through 4½-2½ and now play Scotland. The women, who are top seeds and are playing at Helsingor Golf Club, Denmark, were 4-3 winners and will play Switzerland tomorrow.
Both teams were on the back foot after the two sets of foursomes were won 2-0 by the Irish. But, although the scoreline favoured the opposition, all the matches were close, two finishing on the 17th, one on the 18th and the other, involving Jimmy Mullen and Ashley Chesters, on the 20th.
And in the singles it was the English who converted tight games into wins. In the men’s match Mullen won on the 20th, Chesters on the 17th and Ashton Turner (Image © Leaderboard Photography) on the 18th, beating the Irish open amateur champion Gavin Moynihan. Meanwhile Ben Taylor was in command throughout his match against Brabazon Trophy winner Cormac Sharvin, winning 4/3. Nick Marsh’s game was halved.
In the women’s match, Hayley Davis, the English strokeplay champion, romped to a 7/5 win, while Meghan MacLaren, the British stroke play champion, won 3/2. Alice Hewson claimed her point on the 18th and Charlotte Thomas clinched it for England – on the 22nd hole. A battle royal between the world number one Leona Maguire of Ireland, and world number three Bronte Law ended on the 19th, in Ireland’s favour.
However, the England boys’ team, who qualified top in the stroke play, were beaten 5-2 in their quarter-final by Norway. Bradley Moore and Will Enefer won their morning foursomes, but only Enefer could manage a singles win. They are out of the hunt for medals and now play for place, meeting Italy tomorrow.
England’s girls, who qualified top in flight B of their championship, beat Belgium 3½-1½ and will now play Denmark. Sophie Lamb and Annabel Bailey had a comfortable foursomes win, while Emma Allen won her singles 7/5 and Sammy Fuller claimed the match with a 1 hole win in her game.
