Top seed Karen Jobling became the first high-profile casualty of the English senior women’s championship at Hallamshire Golf Club, Sheffield.
Jobling (Richmond, Yorkshire) bowed out in the first match play round, losing 2 down to Katherine Russell (pictured), a former British senior champion.
Russell (Royal Ashdown Forest, Sussex) now meets Linda Hunt (Newbury & Crookham, Berkshire) who knocked out the England senior captain Debbie Richards (Burhill, Surrey) in a tight game which went to the 18th.
Among the other prominent names to fall at the first hurdle were former champion Janet Melville (Royal Birkdale, Lancashire), together with Lulu Housman (Wyke Green, Middlesex) and Jackie Foster (Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire) who have both won the seniors’ national stroke play title. They were beaten respectively by Janette McWhirter (Appleby, Cumbria), Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath, Staffordshire) and Lindsey Shaw (Chevin, Derbyshire).
The first round of the championship flight – for the Wendy Taylor Trophy – was also marked by some big wins. Two former champions Julie Brown (Trentham, Staffordshire) and Cath Rawthore (Sale, Cheshire) knocked out their opponents 6/4 and 6/5 respectively. Former British champion Felicity Christine (Woking, Surrey) also won 6/5 and new senior, Tracey Williamson (Royal Cromer, Norfolk) went through 5/4.
At the other end of the spectrum former international Amanda Mayne (Saltford, Somerset) went to the 19th to beat Mary Moore (Bingley St Ives, Yorkshire).
In the over 60s flight for the Ann Howard Trophy, defending champion Rosie Waller (Kendal, Cumbria) got off to a flying start with her 5/4 win. Carol Wild (Notts Ladies’) had an even bigger win (6/4) while Ioana McKean (Cottesmore, Sussex) also had a comfortable win of 5/3.
Hallamshire’s last representative in the field had a fight on her hands to stay in the championship. Hazel Fisher finally triumphed on the 20th, which she birdied, having holed a 15-footer on the 19th to keep the match alive.
