Somerset county vice-captain Annya Patten returned a one-under par net score of 72 at Royal North Devon to lead the South West regional qualifiers for England Golf’s 2012 Grand Medal Final.
Annya played in the first group out and set a target which was never beaten. She finished one shot clear of her closest challenger and, after a long wait to be confirmed the winner, said: “This is a fantastic feeling. It’s been a great day and now I’m looking forward to the final.”
The event was contested by the best women club medal players from six counties and the top 10 qualified for the Grand Medal Final to be held at Worcestershire Golf Club on Saturday, June 23.
The 10, who will join qualifiers from five other regions to compete for the title of England’s champion medal player, are Annya Patten (Wheathill), Bethan Brown (The Kendleshire), Angie Brook (Canford Magna), Hatty Edgar (Sherborne) Heather Hunter (Whitsand Bay), Jacqui Bowden (Boscombe Ladies’), Alison Harman (Taunton Vale), Lorna Elliott (Dartmouth), Lisa Lown (Weymouth), Alison Down (Saunton).
All the regional finalists returned the best four scores at their club in the English Women’s Medals during 2011.
Annya took up golf 10 years ago and says: “In the meantime I’ve had a baby, been ladies’ captain at my club and now I’m Somerset county vice-captain!”
She’s also steadily reduced her handicap and could now be down to eight, represented the county second team – and been pleased to see all three of her children take an interest in golf.
