Club Skills Challenge
The Road to the Open is a programme supported by the R&A to provide opportunities for children and young people to be inspired to play golf. This year England Golf will be running the Road to the Open Club Skills Challenge for those clubs who are in the counties of Cheshire and Merseyside.
Our aim is to create an environment where juniors can have fun whilst still learning the basic skills which will help them develop their golf.
What is the Club Skills Challenge?
The clubs skills challenge is aimed at beginner golfers who have just started the game or getting their first handicap.
The skills challenge will be available for golf clubs residing in Cheshire and Merseyside. Each club will nominate a day where they will run the skills challenge, once completed they will then enter the team score on the virtual leaderboard.
There will be six challenges in total – two putting, two chipping and one iron and driving. The teams will have an under-par score once they have added all the challenges together.
Teams consisting of six participants must meet the following criteria:
• We recommend three girls per team
• No handicap or a minimum handicap index of 37
• Players must be 14 years and under on 1st April 2023
Format of the programme
Expression of interest will be open until Friday 24th March. Clubs can express their interest to be part of the programme through filling out an online form here.
We will then inform those clubs who are successful week commencing 27th March 2023.
As part of the application the club will need to identify a club challenge day which they will run the skills challenges and post their scores. Clubs will have from 17th April to 25th June to run their skills challenge and with the final deadline of 25th 23.59 to post their score. Clubs are only allowed to post one score per team.
There is no entry fee or cost to be part of the skills challenge. Clubs can enter more than one team, but individuals can only compete and be part of one team.
Club Challenge Organisers will be invited to attend an activators course where we will also run through the challenges so you can see them being delivered. The venue and date for this course will be confirmed in due course.
PGA Professionals and Club Challenge Organisers will also be invited to watch a webinar on the deliver of the programme.
The top three teams will win tickets to attend one day at The Open at Royal Liverpool between 17th and 23rd July, terms and conditions apply.
