Reid Trophy: Final day – Trophy triumph for Rodríguez Burgos!

Spain’s Arian Rodríguez Burgos saved his best until last to win the 2022 Reid Trophy at Lincoln Golf Club.

The Spaniard pipped Charlie Rusbridge to the title by one shot after carding a level par aggregate total of 213.

An impressive three under par closing round of 68 was the lowest score of the competition and proved to be enough to edge out England’s Rusbridge, who had led for much of the contest.

Rodríguez Burgos knew he had to produce something special after beginning the day in a tie for third alongside Cameron Mukherjee and Alex Boyes on three over par.

Further in front, Rusbridge held a one-shot lead over Ringway’s Cole Self heading into the final round of the 54-hole event.

However, it was the golfer from Spain who made a lightning-quick start with four birdies and zero dropped shots on the front nine.

As for Rusbridge, a couple of unwanted bogeys meant he had lost his overnight advantage and with nine holes to go, it was all to play for.

After making the turn at four under par for the round, the pendulum had swung in favour of Rodríguez Burgos.

Despite a couple of bogeys of his own coming down the stretch, the Spaniard still managed to find two more birdies to finish strongly and post the clubhouse lead on level par.

Playing in the penultimate group meant a nervous wait for Rodríguez Burgos with Rusbridge still out on the course.

A late fightback from the Englishman on the back nine made it interesting as they headed down 18.

However, a bogey on the final hole meant the English Boys’ Under 14 Open Stroke Play title went the way of Rodríguez Burgos.

Rusbridge was the runner up on one over par, whilst Stijn Egging of the Netherlands completed the top three a shot further back.
