Phillips leads the Brabazon qualifiers

Surrey’s Cameron Phillips shot six-under 65 at Camberley Heath, in his home county, to lead the qualifiers for the Brabazon Trophy.

Phillips, from Hindhead (pictured), topped the leaderboard in the southern qualifier, finishing two shots clear of his closest rivals, Tom Thurloway (Chartham Park, Sussex) and George Saunders (Meon Valley, Hampshire),

Altogether 14 players beat par at Camberley Heath, with another 14 matching par. In total, 39 players qualified with the cut falling on one-over.

In the north, the 39 qualifiers at Fairhaven, Lancashire, were led by Callan Barrow (Royal Lytham & St Annes) and Sam Done (Kenwick Park, Lancashire), who both scored two-under 70.

Ten players beat par at Fairhaven and the cut fell on three-over.

The qualifiers go forward to join the 78 exempt players in the Brabazon Trophy – the English men’s open amateur stroke play – at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, from 31 May to 3 June.

The Brabazon Trophy is one of amateur golf’s most prestigious titles and past champions include Major winners Sandy Lyle and Charl Schwartzel, while Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and GolfSixes winner, Paul Dunne and Gavin Moynihan are all among the past challengers.

There’s free admission for spectators.
