Cameron conquers at Saunton in Seniors season opener

The England Senior Series kicked off in clear but windy conditions on Thursday, as Pauline Cameron became the first winner of the season after shooting 38 points at Saunton Golf Club. 

The East Berkshire golfer, playing off 30, managed to fend off the competitiion, to finish two points ahead of last season's Race To Woodhall Spa winner Paul Brine (10-handicap), who picked up 36 points which included two birdies in the tough conditions. His score saw him win the Division 1 category while Pauline triumphed in the Division 2 category. Jolyon Constable (The Point) edged Kevin Smith (Romford) to 3rd-place overall on countback. 

Paul McMullen (Frilford Heath) topped the scratch leaderboard with 32 points after shooting 75 (+4), to top the Order of Merit standings after Round 1. The top 50 players (scratch) in each England Senior Series event pick up points in the Order of Merit, in which players' top-five scores after 15 qualifiers will count towards their Order of Merit placing. The top 12 at the end of the season will qualify to represent the England Senior Series Team in their annual match against the England Captains. Click here to view the Order of Merit table.

Cooper wins opening England Captains event by a single point

Geoffrey Cooper (Ross on Wye) shot 37 points to win the first round of the England Captains season as the 29-handicapper edged The Shropshire's Lorraine Petford (20-handicap) by a single point. 

Robert Jones (Tadmarton Heath) finished 3rd on 35 points while four players came in on 34 points. 

Cooper booked his spot in October's Grand Final at Woodhall Spa while the next 10 players ensured a place at the Regional Qualifier at Knole Park. 

The top 50 players in the field pick up points and after the 15 qualifiers, the best five scores count towards the Order of Merit in which the top 12 players will qualify to play for the England Captains Team against the Senior Series Team.
