England team named to defend Men’s Home Internationals title

Newly crowned Brabazon Trophy winner Sam Bairstow, Amateur champion Laird Shepherd and English Amateur champion John Gough are among the players selected to represent England at this year’s R&A Men’s Home Internationals.

A strong team featuring 11 of the country’s top talents will take on their counterparts from Ireland, Scotland and Wales at Hankley Common Golf Club in Surrey from September 15-17.

England go into the series as defending champions having won the trophy at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland in 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bairstow shot four rounds in the sixties to win the Brabazon at Ganton Golf Club and also qualified for the 149th Open at Royal St George’s in July.

Shepherd showed his prowess in match play when he came from seven holes down at lunch in the Amateur Championship at Nairn to beat Monty Scowsill in an amazing final.

And Gough’s victory at Moortown earlier this month came after a strong week in both stroke play and match play elements of the championship.

Also included in the England line-up is Walker Cup player Jack Dyer (pictured above) and fellow Essex golfer Zach Chegwidden.

In-form Chegwidden is called up after winning the Berkshire Trophy and shooting the lowest round of the week at the Brabazon – a seven under par 64 – while finishing runner-up to Bairstow.

Consistent performers Olly Huggins (main image), Haider Hussain (pictured below) and Arron Edwards-Hill have earned their call-ups along with Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play champion Callan Barrow.

Two of the players who helped a combined England’s boys’ and girls’ team win their Home International series earlier this month at Woodhall Spa – Josh Hill and Jack Bigham – make the step up to the men’s team.

Since the junior Home Internationals, Hill has won the George Henriques Salver at the Brabazon Trophy for the top GB&I player under the age of 20, a prize he shared with England colleague Frank Kennedy.

Bigham (pictured below), meanwhile, won both the stroke play qualifying and then the match play to be crowned The R&A Boys’ Amateur champion earlier this month at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club.

Jack Brooks from Cheshire and Gloucestershire’s Joe Harvey have been put on standby as reserves.

England will face the other home nations in a round robin format over the three days of competition with each match comprising of five morning foursomes and 10 afternoon singles.
