Worcestershire’s David Guest of Halesowen Golf Club has won the title of Fuller’s London Pride Steward of the Year for England Golf’s Midlands region.

He received his trophy at the annual presentation lunch at The Counting House in London, when the national and regional winners were celebrated.

David commented: “It’s really great to win an award where you have been voted for by your members and it shows you’re going in the right direction. But, it’s very much a team effort at Halesowen.”

The competition, to find and recognise England’s top golf club stewards, is run by Fuller’s and England Golf and is now in its seventh year. The 2013 edition attracted a record entry, with over 700 votes cast and more stewards nominated than ever before.

David, a keen golfer, has helped to create a community spirit at Halesowen and has had a positive effect on the club’s finances.

He’s a qualified chef and was quick to introduce home-made specials at the club, accompanied by the weekly local guest beers and Halesowen’s ‘own-label’ house wine. He runs a weekly carvery, which has a three-week waiting list, puts on monthly quiz nights and a host of other functions including casino nights, cuisine nights and a masked summer ball. He also hosts outside events, such as weddings and christenings.

He’s renowned for his ‘Pride of Midlands’ competition which capitalises on football enthusiasms and rivalries within the club. Members play the 18-hole event in football teams – and football shirts are definitely the order of the day as they compete for an FA-style trophy. The reigning champions are Wolves – which just happens to be David’s club!

David is also the club’s junior organiser and works closely with the club’s PGA professional on a four-year plan to attract new, young players. During his involvement the numbers have increased almost four-fold.

David, and the other three regional winners, were presented with their awards by England Golf chief executive David Joy and Mark Roberts, Fuller’s Trade Marketing Manager.

The other three were: national and Northern winners, Simon and Karen Ward of Wilmslow, Cheshire; South East winner Steve Warren of Eaton, Norwich; and South West winner, for the second year in succession, Anna Tyson of Dainton Park in Devon.

They were chosen after a rigorous judging process. The 2012 Steward of the Year, Yvonne James of Rugby Golf Club, joined the judges to whittle down the record entry to three finalists from each region. Each of these 12 were visited personally before the four regional winners were selected, having been judged on their commitment, innovation and standard of service and presentation, together with that extra special something which sets them apart.
