US honours for England students


England’s Meghan MacLaren and Lauren Taylor have scooped “Freshman of the Year” honours on the US women’s college circuit.

Meghan, from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, (Image © Leaderboard Photography) takes the title for the Sun Belt Conference. Lauren, from Woburn, receives the accolade from the Big 12 Conference.  Both teenagers have recently won their respective conference championships.

Meghan, a member of the England Golf Performance USA Squad, is a student at Florida International University and has won three times in her first year.

Before starting university Meghan was in England’s winning team at the girls’ Home Internationals, she won the French U18 open title and was runner up in the English girls’ championship.
Lauren, an England international and past winner of the British women’s championship, is a student at Baylor University in Texas and she won the conference championship by eight shots.

She is only the second Baylor student to win the Big 12 Freshman of the Year title, following in the footsteps of England’s Hannah Burke, who won in 2007.

The next target now for both players and their university teams is this week’s regional finals of the national NCAA championship.

In the end of season awards both Conferences named their honorary teams. The Sun Belt first team included, alongside Meghan MacLaren: Abigail Laker (Frilford Heath/Arkansas State), Sophie Godley, (Lindrick/ FIU).The second team included  Alison Knowles (Hickleton/ Louisiana-Monroe)

The Big 12 first team included both Lauren Taylor and Baylor team-mate Hayley Davis (Ferndown), who is a past winner of the English girls’ and women’s championships. Hayley was also named to the team last year when she was a freshman.
