Twenty women golfers from the Midlands North and Midlands South regions have won through qualifying events to book their places at England Golf’s 2012 Grand Medal Final.
They will join qualifiers from four other regions to compete for the title of England’s champion medal player at Worcestershire Golf Club on Saturday, June 23. All the regional finalists returned the best four scores at their club in the English Women’s Medals during 2011.
The successful ten from the Midlands South regional qualifier at Gay Hill are Liz Keens (Gerrards Cross), Linda Hunt (Newbury & Crookham, picture © Leaderboard Photography), Sue Gwynn (Sapey), Jean Garrett (Weston Turville), Helen Dellow (Stoneleigh Deer Park), Victoria Rogers (Bromsgrove), Sue Edlin (Cotswold Hills), Susan Jones (Rugby), Carol O’Hare (Shirley), Olivia Freer (Huntswood).
The Midlands South regional final was open to players from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire & Herefordshire.
This was Liz Keens’ biggest win in a very short golfing career: she’s been playing golf for only 18 months and is already down to nine handicap.
She took up the game after playing hockey and tennis and is so new to the sport that she didn’t know there was a competition for each club’s best medal player. “I didn’t know it existed and now I’m in the final! I’m looking forward to that.”
The successful ten from the Midlands North final at Burton-on-Trent are: Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath), Corinne Boyd (Kibworth), Sarah Haslum (Longcliffe), Julie Patrone (Rothley Park), Karen Martland (Charnock Richard), Jodie Peacock (Rufford Park), Carol Houghton (Oakmere Park Admirals), Olivia Raybould (South Staffordshire), Lucille Wood (Little Aston), Deborah Stephenson (Bingley [St. Ives])
The Midlands North final was contested by players from Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire.
Sue Spencer, who won the qualifier, is the Staffordshire county captain, a past county champion and a former course record holder at her club. Last year she was in the winning scratch partnership at the Midlands North foursomes.
She set up her winning score with an eagle three on the par-five 17th hole and had a birdie earlier in her round.
Both regional finals were played in very wet conditions. Qualifying scores:
