Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset has chosen to mark the reopening of its course from 29 March with a charity fundraiser.
And the idea behind the initiative is simple – the worse you play, the more money you raise, the better you’ll feel!
With charities suffering a shortfall in income during the pandemic year, Robin Haycock and friends at Ferndown wanted to restart the 2021 season on a positive note.
The challenge is a simple one – each golfer pays a £3 entry fee, marks a card according to their handicap and for every shot they finish above par, they donate an additional £1 to Marie Curie funds.
Robin explained: “It occurred to me when the prime minister announced his road map that it would be a good idea to celebrate the game’s return and at the same time help out a Covid-related charity.
“The whole point of the idea we struck upon is that it gives everyone the opportunity to feel good about playing badly – which may be the case for a lot of us after a long lay-off!
“Everyone I’ve spoken to in and round Ferndown has been really positive about the whole idea and through Marie Curie’s involvement on a national level we hope that this can be the same for golfers and at golf clubs all over the country.
“We’re looking to get some local celebrities involved at Ferndown – Harry Redknapp is playing on the first day back and we’re working on some others.
“Golfers can take part just among their own social groups or clubs may want to organise it for the whole membership.
“No matter how people choose to get involved the charity will benefit from their generosity.”
Tiffany Fleming, another of the organisers at Ferndown Golf Club, added: “Everyone has been really enthusiastic about getting back to golf. Of course, many golf clubs will have sadly lost members over the last year or so and it won’t be easy for everyone to start back. But golf clubs have a community feel about them and being involved in a positive way raising money in this way can be a good thing to bring people together again.”
Individuals who wish to donate to the ReOpen challenge in aid of Marie Curie may do so through a justgiving page.
Clubs wishing to follow Ferndown’s example and support Marie Curie can do so by joining in the ‘ReOpen Challenge’ between 29 March and 12 April.
