Tansley holds his nerve to complete Captain’s win

Graham Tansley from Toot Hill Golf Club maintained his lead from the first day of the England Golf Captain’s Tournament to emerge victorious at Woodhall Spa’s Hotchkin course.

After recording 39 points on the opening round, his 32 point score in round two was enough to fend off the competition by a single point in wet conditions.

His great score in the first round was powered by clean hitting where he struck every fairway off the tee and putted well to record three birdies. The second round was a different story as the overhead and under-foot conditions meant he was forced to scrap for a score, including saving par three times when in the sand.

This was no more prevalent than when heavy rain forced him to take relief from an animal hole on the penultimate hole of the competition. After dropping the ball twice, he placed it in the relief area on the fairway, only to have the ball roll into the bunker!

Because the ball had been paced in-play and was moved by natural forces, he had to play it from the bunker. Incredibly he struck his bunker shot to within three feet of the hole and rolled in the subsequent putt.

He was understandably delighted after his win: “Having played in the qualifiers for the last eight years, and qualifying for three finals previously, I am ecstatic to win on a very tough golf course. To beat a quality field is very satisfying.”

Tansley, who was Toot Hill GC Captain in both 2000 and 2010 saw off closest competition from Lionel Dobson (Brampton GC) and Brian Robinson (Belton Woods GC) to take the title.
