An eight-strong mixed team of talented youngsters will represent England Golf in an under-16 international against their age group rivals from Spain at the Spanish National Golf Centre in Madrid on 24th and 25th May.
This meeting of the two nations in this age group replaces a similar match which is usually scheduled as a curtain-raiser to the North of England under 16 Championship.
The match will give most of the four boys and four girls their first taste of international action outside of Britain.
The girls selected are:
Mollie Lawrence, 16, (Rochester & Cobham Park, Kent) represented England in the 2014 Scottish U16 championship where she tied seventh, and in the Irish U18 girls’ championship. She was a member of the Kent women’s team which competed at the 2013 English County Finals. Martha Lewis, 14, (St George’s Hill, Surrey) tied fifth in the Scottish U16 championship, having warmed up for the season with a successful trip to the USA where she was third in her age group in the Junior Honda Classic. She was both runner-up and England’s leading player at last year’s English girls’ open U13 championship. She is a member of the England Golf U16 South squad.
Natasha Slater, 14, (Furness, Cumbria) was third in the girls’ event at this season’s Fairhaven Trophies, following a top ten finish in the Scottish U16 open stroke play championship. She is a member of the England Golf U16 North squad.
Billie-Jo Smith, 14, (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire) represented England in this season’s Scottish U16 championship, where she tied fifth. She was 10th in the English U15 championship last year and tied 11th in the St Andrews junior ladies’ open. She trains with the England Golf U16 East Midlands squad.
The four boys are:
Toby Briggs, 14, (Dunston Hall, Norfolk) plays for the Norfolk first team and is the son of Peter Briggs, a professional and Director of Golf at Dunston Hall. In 2013, Toby finished 11th in the Nationals Schools U16 Championship at Bolton Old Links and he recently shared 13th place in the Fairhaven Trophy. He is a member of the England Golf U16 East of England squad.
Oliver Clarke, 15, (Formby, Lancashire) is a member of the Lancashire boys team. In 2013, he finished tied fourth in the Lancashire Championship at Hillside and was runner-up in the county’s Boys Championship at Ashton & Lea. He was also fourth in the England Golf North Group Boys Qualifying and joint third in the Faldo Series North Boys. In the recent McEvoy Trophy he was tied 16th.
Nathan Longley, 15, (Worthing, Sussex) finished fifth in last year’s Scottish U16 Championship at Portleven, ending on level par. He was a member of the Worthing team that won the Sussex County’s Andy Beer Trophy recently while he finished equal sixth in the Faldo Series North Boys at Moortown. He is a member of the South East U16 squad.
Arrun Singh-Brar, 15, (Foxhills, Surrey) has been capped by England at under 16 level for the past two years.
