New British champion Georgia Hall is among six English players selected for the GB&I team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe.
The match takes place at Chantilly Golf Club, near Paris, on Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, 2013.
Georgia, from Remedy Oak in Dorset, will be joined by Gabriella Cowley (Brocket Hall), Hayley Davis (Ferndown), Bronte Law (Bramhall), Alex Peters (Notts Ladies) and Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer). The team will be completed by Amy Boulden and Becky Harries of Wales and Stephanie Meadow of Ireland.
A companion U16 event will be played simultaneously and the junior Vagliano side includes four English players: Samantha Fuller (Roehampton), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted), Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe) and Sophie Madden (West Essex). They will be joined by Scotland’s Fiona Liddell and Ireland’s Olivia Mehaffey. There are three more English players among the reserves: Eloise Healey (West Lancs), Emma Allen (Meon Valley) and Victoria Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies’).
The Vagliano Trophy team will be captained by Tegwen Matthews, the successful Curtis Cup team leader at Nairn last June, who herself played in four Vagliano Trophy matches in the 1970s and was never on the losing side.
She commented: "I have a magic Vagliano 2013 team and look forward to the return of the match to the beautiful course at Chantilly, where GB&I last won the trophy. My players and I will be trying very hard to do the same this time.”
This will be the 28th Vagliano Trophy match, played every two years since its inception as a GB&I versus Continent of Europe contest. The two-day match will feature four foursomes and eight singles each day. The Continent has won the last three matches – 15-9 at Fairmont St Andrews (2007), 13-11 at Hamburg (2009) and 15.5 -8.5 at Royal Porthcawl (2011) – but GB&I lead 15-11 overall with only
one match drawn.
The U16 team will be captained by Elaine Farquharson-Black, an Aberdeen-based solicitor who played in the Vagliano Trophy matches of 1989 and 1991 and the
Curtis Cup matches of 1990 and 1992.
