Seven England golfers, who are all hopefuls for a place in the GB&I Vagliano Trophy team, have been invited to a pre-Christmas session at The Belfry with the captain and manager.
They are Emma Allen (Meon Valley), Lianna Bailey (Kirby Muxloe), Gemma Clews, (Delamere Forest), India Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe) and Lizzie Prior (Burhill). Three Irish players have also been invited by the Ladies Golf Union: Maria Dunne, Leona Maguire and Olivia Mehaffey.
Allen (image copyright Leaderboard Photography), Hewson and Prior were in England's winning European championship team; Lamb is the British stroke play champion; Clews was third on the England Golf women's Order of merit, Bailey was sixth and Clyburn is a past winner of the English girls' championship. Hewson was in the winning 2016 Curtis Cup team and, with Clews, was in the 2015 Vagliano team.
The 10 players will join captain Elaine Farquharson-Black, who led GB&I to Curtis Cup victory in June, and team manager Helen Hewlett for the two-day session on December 21 and 22.
The Vagliano Trophy and the companion junior match will be played at Circolo Golf Bogogno in Italy from 30 June – 1 July.
The GB&I team of eight players for the Vagliano Trophy will be announced on 18 May 2017. The team will be made up of:
a) The top four players from the World Amateur Golf Rankings on 17 May 2017.
b) The top two players from the LGU Order of Merit. If a player has already qualified via their world ranking their place will be deferred to method (c) player have already qualified via
c) Two players or more depending on (b) above will be selected by the International Selection Panel.
The Junior Vagliano team of six players aged under 16 on 1st January 2017 will be chosen by the International Selection Panel.
