Senior Women’s Stroke Play – Day One: Ducrey leads the way

Switzerland’s Sophie Ducrey conjured up two eagles as she took flight to the top of the day one leaderboard.

Ducrey’s fine three-under par round of 70 saw her end the first day of play at Coventry Golf Club as the only lady in red numbers at the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

An eagle at the par four, 8th hole was spectacular enough on its own.

When she then followed it with a three at the par 5, 10th hole, the golfer from Lausanne knew she was onto something special.

Fresh from taking part in the European Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in Estonia last week where she finished tied for eighth spot, Ducrey showed plenty of competitive edge.

But with 36 holes to play at the Midlands venue there is still plenty of time for the chasing pack to close the gap.

Broadstone’s Jane Southcombe – a runner up in the 2021 English Senior Women’s Amateur at Market Rasen – can take heart from the way she battled back to post a level par round of 73.

Southcombe was struggling after a double on the sixth hole took her to three over the card.

But a run of five birdies from the seventh through to the 16th hole hauled her back into contention even if two closing bogeys left her frustrated.

Jackie Foster (pictured above) from Bishops Stortford is another who has been over the course before having won this title in back-to-back years from 2016. From a position only four back from Ducrey at +1, she remains a danger to the leader.

Woking’s Felicity Christine is a further shot back after a round of 75 while Helen Lowe, the 2018 champion from Scraptoft, is level with Enville’s Jenny Deeley on three over par.

Australia’s Sue Wooster – winner of the European Seniors on Saturday – is tied with current Senior Women’s Amateur champion Aileen Greenfield and Waterlooville’s Kerry Smith on +4.
