Senior women join Champions weekend

This is women’s County Champion of Champions weekend – and for the first time this year the seniors will join the title hunt.

All three age groups – girls, women and senior women – will be on parade at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire, where the action will unfold on the Green course.

Champions weekend is a long-established feature of the men’s calendar and two years ago it was extended to include women and girls. Now, with the inclusion of senior women to complete the line-up, the female competitions have become an event in their own right.

The girls will play their 36 holes tomorrow and Bedfordshire’s Georgia Staroscik (Leighton Buzzard) will be back to defend the title she won last year. (Image copyright Leadrboard Photography).

The women county champions play their 36-hole event on Sunday and the field includes Buckinghamshire’s Daisy Kennedy (Stoke Park) who has represented England at U16 level, and Middlesex champion Lulu Housman (Wyke Green), who has been an England senior champion and international.

The seniors play 18 holes on each day and the inaugural event has attracted players including the former internationals, Lancashire’s Janet Melville (Royal Birkdale), Somerset’s Amanda Mayne (Saltford) and Norfolk’s Jo Ashmore (Barnham Broom).

The men, boys and senior men will contest their County Champion of Champions titles next weekend at Woodhall Spa.
