Cornwall’s Sarah-Jane Boyd has opened up a five shot lead with one round to play in the English women’s amateur championship at Kings Norton Golf Club, Worcestershire.

The British stroke play champion (image © Leaderboard Photography) birdied the last hole to shoot level par 72 in this morning’s third round and is one-under for the tournament.

Gabriella Cowley, who is playing alongside Sarah-Jane in the final pairing, was one shot off the pace after two rounds, but slipped back with a third round 76.

English stroke play champion Alex Peters moved up in to third place after her third round 73, which also ended with a birdie four on the 18th.

The sun shone throughout the morning round – in marked contrast to the first two days – and there were a host of sparkling scores, with four players returning one-under 71.

Chelsea Masters of Sussex, who made the cut for the first time, propelled herself into fourth place, one ahead of England international Amber Ratcliffe, after both dipped below par.

“I holed a lot more putts than I have done in the earlier rounds,” said Chelsea. “Now I’ve just got to do it again – and not get ahead of myself!”

Amber started her round with two bogeys but she had a sizzling back nine of three birdies and six pars. “I holed a few good putts today which was handy,” she said. “All week they’ve been lipping out or shaving the hole.”

New Gloucestershire champion Jo Hodge (The Kendleshire) also putted well for her 71 and said: “It’s the first time I’ve made the cut and moved up the leaderboard! I usually go the other way.” She’s currently sharing seventh place with four other players.

Among them is Charlotte Thompson of Essex, who also had the measure of the greens with just 30 putts in her 71. “I haven’t had my A game and my short game has been saving me this week,” she remarked.
