The Saltford Golf Club team stormed to a surprise English Junior Champion Club title with a tournament-high 81 points on round two at the Hotchkin Course in Woodhall Spa.
The Somerset trio of Dewi John, Dylan John and Alex Georgiou scored 68 points on day one to lay 12th but blew away the other contenders with a fantastic set of results on Tuesday to leapfrog into first place.
It took some special play on Tuesday to seal the title and 15-year-old Dewi John led from the front with a tournament-high contribution of 80 points, including 42 in the second round following a -2 round of 70 for the 4-handicapper.
While it was 13-year-old Dylan John’s 39 point haul that helped Saltford over the line as they were chased to the end by Dorset’s Parkstone Golf Club who finished just one point behind the winners.
The team qualified for the national final through the Burnham and Berrow Junior Open and had actually qualified once before in 2017 with the same three players. However, 2019 would be a different story.
Junior Organiser David Phillips said: “We are extremely proud of the way the juniors have played, especially on the back nine today. Having qualified for this tournament on several occasions, it’s something we’ve always wanted to win.”
