Reid Trophy – Day One: Rusbridge makes early move

Charlie Rusbridge surged into top spot at the end of day one of the Reid Trophy after a round of 69 which included six birdies.

The Colne Valley golfer (main image) leads by two shots from Hillside’s Maxi Moore at the end of an entertaining opening day at Lincoln Golf Club.

Four players – Pablo Valderrama Garcia, Cole Self, Thomas Hartshorne and Antoni Hawkins (pictured below) – are a further shot back after signing for one over par rounds of 72.

In total, a field of 133 under 14 boys teed it up for the chance to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Kris Kim who lifted the title at Porters Park Golf Club.

Rusbridge enjoyed a steady start as he made par on the first three holes and birdied the fourth but dropped shots at five and six saw him one over at the turn.

He pulled back to level par with a birdie on 11 and some consistent golf then saw him make par on the next four holes.

Saving his best for late in the day, Rusbridge birdie the 16th and 17th holes to ensure he would come home in 32 shots and take the overnight lead.

Moore (pictured above) – starting out from the 10th hole – made the dream start as he birdied the 10th but a dropped shot on 15 saw him level par at the turn.

A birdie at the par-four first was quickly followed by a bogey on the third but the Hillside golfer continued to perform well and ended the day level par, just two shots behind the leader.

The players will be jostling for position tomorrow in order to make it into the top 70 and make the cut to return for the third and final day’s play when a further 18 holes will be played.
