England’s Tom Plumb came within a whisker of joining a play-off for the South American Amateur title in Chile.
Plumb (Yeovil) birdied the 17th hole of the final round to draw level with the leaders on seven-under par. But a bogey on the last cost him dearly, dropping him back into a tie for third place on six-under.
The championship was won for the second year in a row by Canada’s Chris Crisologo, who beat Luis Gagne of Costa Rico on the second extra hole.
Plumb was part of a four strong England squad playing in the championship. Billy McKenzie (Rowlands Castle) was 19th in the men’s event, while Emily Brennan (Trentham) was ninth in the women’s champions and Georgina Blackman (Chelmsford) was 20th.
