Castle Royle trio fly the English flag

The three-man team from Castle Royle flew the flag for England with fourth place in the European Men’s Club Trophy.

David Langley, Tim Shin and Nick Scrutton took their place in the international event after the BB&O venue won the English Champion Club tournament.

They made a quick impact and led for the first two rounds at Golf du Medoc in France.

Langley, an England international, put them on track with his bogey-free opening round of six-under 65, which gave the team a one-shot lead over the defending champions, Racing Club de France La Boulie.

After the second round, which was delayed by fog, the team held a two shot lead, thanks to the 68 of Langley and 69 from Shin.

But in the final round the defending champions - searching for their third title in four years - caught fire on the back-nine, collectively making eight birdies and an eagle through holes 10-14. It propelled them to the top of the leaderboard and to their seventh victory overall.

Meanwhile, Castle Royle suffered contrasting fortunes on the back nine and slipped back to fourth place. The runners-up were Gytteggard golfclub of Denmark, whose members included the twins, Nicolai, - the European Amateur Champion - and Rasmus, who helped Denmark become world champions in September. Third place went to the Spanish club, RGC El Prat
